Lightning, or other power surges, can enter your computer through numerous connections including the:

  • Modem
  • Power Cord
  • High Speed Network
  • and Speakers

In fact, anything connected to your computer could be a conduit for power surges to get in and damage the internal components of your computer.

Damage may be limited to the individual component receiving the surge, such as your modem, or could be widespread.  Widespread power surges usually result in damage that is too great to repair.

Protect your investment and your data by purchasing a good quality surge protector and battery back-up.  Surge protectors are available to protect your power cables, telephone lines, and high speed internet connections.

A tree fell onto a power line, pushing the power line into the telephone line.  A huge power surge then entered the computer through the modem, creating extensive damage to the modem and burning out the motherboard.  Click here for a close up view.
A power surge, most likely lightning, entered this computer through the telephone line connected to the  modem and burned out several components on the modem
When the power surge entered this computer through the modem, the power arched between components on the modem and the metal computer chassis.  You can see the burn marks in the bottom of the chassis in a semi-circle pattern.
This laptop motherboard was damaged when the owner plugged it in and heard a "popping" noise.  From the Top side, the only visible damage is a few small burn marks and a damaged resistor
The real damage appears on the back.  A short created a large enough current to melt several components and parts of the motherboard itself.
This close up view shows the severe damage to the board where the power connector attaches to the board, as well as to the video connector.
